The year 1862 marked two important developments that touch the lives of people around the world: the establishment of U.S. land-grant universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Land-grant universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture continue to work in communities to put agriculture research into action, to improve health care, to revitalize urban and rural economies and to educate.
The 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival brought these efforts to life through demonstrations and hands-on activities.

It takes years for researchers to develop new varieties of potato through cross-pollination. The final test is the taste test, as demonstrated here by Lynn Ketchum of Oregon State University.
Founded in 1868, Oregon State is the only university in Oregon to hold the Carnegie Foundation's top designation for research institutions.
